KUALA LUMPUR – Police today warned Singaporean drivers to settle their traffic fines or risk being denied passage back to the island nation.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department (TEID) director Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said there are more than 108,000 fines that were issued in person and via mail against Singaporean drivers between 2016 and 2021 that remain unpaid.
“TEID wishes to remind all Singaporean traffic offenders that they can be barred from exiting the country if they happen to have overdue summonses,” he said.
Mat Kasim said the police have the power to arrest and charge traffic offenders with overdue summonses.
Among the common offences committed by Singaporean drivers include speeding, cutting queue, ignoring road signs, not using seat belts and running traffic lights, he said.
Mat Kasim said traffic police have been equipped with 40 vehicle registration plate scanner devices or iCops, along with in-car speed radars to step up monitoring and enforcement of traffic.
He said he expects the new road charges system and vehicle entry permit records systems to be implemented at the borders by the Road Transport Department soon will help with enforcement.
