KUALA LUMPUR – The Canadian man who was caught on video refusing to wear a mask in a supermarket has been fined RM800 by the magistrates’ court here.

The fine was issued by magistrate S. Mageswary after Theberge Travis Lee, 44, pleaded guilty to two charges, reported Kosmo. He could be jailed for up to 15 days if he failed to pay the fine.

Under the Minor Offences Act, Lee was accused of giving a security guard the middle finger at 9.30pm on April 16 in a supermarket on Jalan Ampang.

He was also charged for not wearing a mask in the same premises under Regulation 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas).

Lee was represented by Jayaranda Rao, who in mitigation, said the client apologised for the incident and gave his full cooperation to police.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor Wardah Nasuha Safian submitted that the court should impose the appropriate punishment to serve as a deterrent.

Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah on April 19 said a 44-year-old suspect was taken into custody after his statement was recorded at the Wangsa Maju district headquarters.

Ashari also confirmed investigations into an 18-second video posted on Twitter showing a Caucasian man refusing to wear a mask while hurling expletives at security guards on duty. – The Vibes, April 26, 2022
