IPOH – The investigation paper on the 28-year-old trailer driver, who was detained over an accident that resulted in the death of five youths on Wednesday, will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor next Tuesday and the police expect him to be charged on the same day.
Kuala Kangsar district police chief ACP Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said if all goes smoothly, the accused will be brought to court to be charged Tuesday afternoon.
He told Bernama that the police will apply for an extension to his remand order at the Kuala Kangsar Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
The driver reported having been issued 22 traffic summonses, of which 21 had been settled, including eight summonses for speeding.
Meanwhile, the remaining three victims are buried today in Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Johor, respectively.
The bodies of Muhammad Nabil Haikal Muhammad Fariz, 19; Iqbal Hasnun Halimi, 23; and Muhammad Nasrun Aidol Munir Akbar, 22, were prepared for burial at the Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah mosque after their identities were confirmed.
Nasrun was buried at the Muslim cemetery in Jalan Kuala Kubu, Selangor at 7.55am while Nabil Haikal was buried at the Kariah Batang Benar cemetery in Negri Sembilan at 9am.
Iqbal was buried at the Kg Melayu Seelong Muslim cemetery in Senai at 7.30am.
Yesterday, Ahmad Akmal Ahmad Mokhlis, 20, was buried at the Masjid Hijau cemetery in Parit Buntar, Perak while Ahmad Naim Najmi Ahmad Hafizan, 21, was laid to rest in Kemaman’s Kijal cemetery.
MTUC vice-president Matkar Siwang has urged the Transport Ministry and Malaysian Highway Authority to take the necessary steps to reduce the number of road accidents.
Claiming that the Menora tunnel area has become an “accident-prone” zone, he said the Road Safety Department under the ministry should immediately carry out a study to determine the cause of allegedly frequent crashes in the area.
Last year, several accidents were reported within the vicinity of the tunnel.
Early yesterday morning, five youths burnt to death after the car they were travelling in caught fire from a collision with two trailers at KM246 of the North-South Expressway northbound near Kuala Kangsar.
The trailer ferrying mosaic tiles, heading north, drove in the right lane as the left lane from KM246 to KM244.4 was closed for road maintenance.
At the same time, a car was following behind the trailer when suddenly another trailer carrying metal fences, driving in the same direction, could not brake in time and crashed into the back of the car. – The Vibes, May 14, 2022
