KOTA KINABALU – Kapayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang is urging the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) administration to impose stringent control on the prices of basic necessities, saying that the people are angry.

She received complaints from angry individuals over rising prices of basic essential goods.

The public has been grumbling to her that cooking oil (Vesawit brand) now costs RM12.70 per 2kg bottle, chicken wings prices have increased from RM110 to RM120 per 15kg, and a tray of eggs has increased from RM11 to RM15.50 per tray.

“Cooking oil is a basic essential item, and businesses that use cooking oil have no choice but to increase the prices of their products. The consumers have to bear with the price, but entrepreneurs are now suffering from lack of buyers for their products too,” the DAP rep said in a statement today.

As such, Lasimbang urged both the federal and state government to help the food industry deal with the impact of rising prices.

She added that the dramatic increase of essential goods prices has had a negative impact on food traders and breeders as well and if the price of control is set, many breeders and traders may suffer great losses and cause businesses to close down.

Furthermore, the politician pointed out that the situation is tough enough as it is after the pandemic, but the rising costs of essential goods is another blow.

“This is compounded with the lack of supplies of basic essential goods,” she said. – The Vibes, May 27, 2022
