KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested the Sabah People’s Unity Party (PPRS) president over allegations of fraud in connection with the selling of fake identification documents.
Mohd Arshad Abdul Mualap, along with one Mohamad Amkah Ahmad, were arrested and are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud.
“The statements from these syndicates imply that people who hold these cards can eventually receive all the perks of a citizen,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin told a press conference today.
The duo were arrested at a house in Subang Jaya on June 22 and were subsequently charged at the Shah Alam High Court this morning.
Hamzah added that initial investigations found hundreds of individuals were duped by the syndicate.
He said the arrests came after he received a tip-off from an individual outside of Malaysia.
“I then instructed Tan Sri IGP (Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani) to mobilise a special unit to investigate.”
Meanwhile, PPRS is believed to have been in existence since 2006, but was only officially registered as a political party in 2014.
Additionally, in the 2013 general election, Arshad stood against then chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman for the Sibuga seat as an independent, but only received a paltry 200 out of 28,800 votes.
PPRS had partnered with the United Sabah Alliance ahead of the 2018 general election, an alliance comprising the Sabah Progressive Party, Sabah Star and the Sabah People’s Hope Party. – The Vibes, June 30, 2022
