GEORGE TOWN – Police have redeployed its 60-strong tourism unit to landmark areas here to safeguard public order, with many of its personnel will be on their rounds riding modified mountain bicycles.
State chief police officer Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police cyclists will be stationed at landmarks in the Unesco World Heritage Site here and the tourism belt of Batu Ferringhi.
He added that police bicycles are part of the new policing techniques, which many countries, particularly the developed nations, have adopted.
“Tourists are also encouraged to alert our personnel out patrolling if they come across incidents or people behaving suspiciously.”
Yesterday, the Penang government, through its state tourism exco Yeoh Soon Hin, donated 15 mountain bikes to the state police contingent.
Yeoh said that the donation costs around RM30,000 and more bikes to be handed over in due time, as part of the state’s commitment to help the police in ensuring that the state has a high standard in safety and security here. – The Vibes, August 31, 2022
