KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain has won the five-cornered contest for Pahang’s Tioman state seat, with a slim majority of 573 votes.

An Election Commission (EC) official for the by-election announced the result at 9.30pm.

Johari secured the state seat with 8,080 votes while Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Nor Idayu Hashim garnered 7,507 votes.

Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Mohd Fadzli Mohd Ramly only obtained 784 votes, while Pejuang candidate Osman A. Bakar and independent Sulaiman Bakar got 79 and 58 votes, respectively.

Even though Fadzli made way for the BN candidate following the formation of the unity federal government, his name was still on the ballot.

Apart from Johari and Nor Idayu, all other candidates lost their deposits.

With this, BN and PN are tied with 17 seats each in the Pahang assembly while PH has 8. However, BN is helming the state government with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail after PH threw its support behind its unity government partner.

Pahang BN chairman Wan Rosdy was sworn in as menteri besar on November 28.

Voter turnout for the Tioman by-election saw 16,508 out of 28,465 turning up to cast their ballots.

The Tioman poll could not be held simultaneously with the 15th general election after PN candidate Md Yunus Ramli died a few hours before polling day on November 19. – The Vibes, December 7, 2022
