KUALA LUMPUR – The enhanced movement control order (EMCO) at Seberang Prai Prison and its staff quarters in Penang will be lifted today, six weeks after it came into force.
Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob told a press conference today that the Health Ministry has conducted 3,254 Covid-19 screenings in the two places, with 606 positive cases recorded.
“However, the ministry has confirmed that the last positive case reported was on November 29, and that there are no more test samples awaiting result.
“On the advice of the ministry and following its risk assessment, the National Security Council meeting today decided to end the EMCO in the two areas today, as scheduled.”
The Seberang Prai Prison and living quarters were placed under two-week EMCO on October 22, before being extended twice until today.
Ismail Sabri said the government has agreed to lift the EMCO in other localities in Sabah after conducting risk assessments there, and on the advice of the Health Ministry.
They are the Tawau temporary detention centre, Sandakan Prison and the Taman Wira Prison quarters in Sandakan, which were placed under the restriction order on November 6, and Kg Nahaba and Tegudon, Kota Belud, which were under EMCO since November 20.
The EMCO in all these areas are set to end tomorrow as scheduled.
Meanwhile, he said the EMCO in Zone B and C of Taman Meru 2C in Ipoh, Perak, will be extended another week from December 4.
“The ministry confirmed that it has yet to obtain the results from a number of Covid-19 test samples in the area. As such, the meeting today decided to extend the order there by another seven days, until December 10,” he said. – The Vibes, December 2, 2020
