GEORGE TOWN – Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid has lodged a police report against Permatang Pauh MP Mohammed Fawwaz Mohammed Jan for instigating racial tensions despite the latter’s apology.

Although Fawwaz had apologised and deleted a social media post accusing non-Muslims of disrespecting Islam, Syerleena said that the original act of uploading it could harm the country’s unity.

“It is racial and insulting to all Malaysians. The use of race and religion for evil things should be stopped,” the DAP Wanita committee member said.

Syerleena, who is also the Seri Delima assemblyman, said that Fawwaz had weaponised social media to spread the “flames of hatred” among his supporters just to make political gains.

The statement is also an offence under Sections 499, 505B, and 505C of the Penal Code as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1988, Syerleena noted.

In the now-deleted post, the administrator of the Facebook page had apparently posted a statement claiming that non-Muslims were working to bring down Islam.

The Penang PAS Youth chief has since apologised for the comment.

He also claimed the statement was written and uploaded by the said administrator without his knowledge.

Syerleena said this is not the first time Fawwaz has attempted to incite racial and religious tensions. – The Vibes, January 20, 2023
