MIRI – Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has welcomed the plan to construct a RM30 million flagpole monument in Kuching despite the project being heavily criticised by opposition parties.

Tiong, who is Bintulu MP and Dudong state assemblyman, today described the project in the state capital as a “good idea”.

Speaking to reporters in Kuching during a visit to the police headquarters, he said the flagpole project, which will also be funded by a private company, can help promote tourism.

“We welcome the involvement of the private sectors and support their initiatives,” he said.

The 99m tall flagpole in Petra Jaya, which will cost RM30 million, was defended by Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday.

He said it is “not an ordinary flagpole” and is meant to symbolise Sarawak’s achievements.

Those criticising the project include Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who said it is unnecessary, and that the money could be used to fund more useful projects such as school repairs.

Parti Bumi Kenyalang president Voon Lee Shan had also criticised the project, saying that it is a waste of money regardless whether the funding comes from the government or private sector. – The Vibes, February 1, 2023
