KUALA LUMPUR – A seemingly irate Gobind Singh Deo (Damansara-PH) tore into the country’s enforcement agencies today for continuing to fail to act against those allegedly involved in major crimes, despite multiple reports lodged.
The DAP deputy chairman said this is especially perplexing when considering action was taken against two 18-year-olds over a recent viral video ridiculing the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) history paper.
Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat, Gobind cited the government’s procurement of littoral combat ships (LCS) and the controversial takeover of Kuala Lumpur Tower as examples of unresolved cases.
In the case of LCS, he noted that despite having paid RM6 billion, not a single ship has been delivered to the government to date, while no action has been taken by the authorities – so far, only former navy chief Tan Sri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor has been charged.
“I ask MACC to explain what actions have been taken and why there is no answer to complaints lodged. For me, it’s simple…if there is wrongdoing, take action,” he said when debating the Budget 2023, here, today.
On the contentious ownership transfer of KL Tower, Gobind similarly highlighted the eerie silence of authorities over the case. He questioned the apparent lack of enforcement action taken so far.
“This involves such an important issue. It’s KL Tower we are talking about. Don’t tell me after complaints are lodged, (that) no action is taken? I demand an explanation on the matter,” he said.
The case caught public attention in December after it was revealed that Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s subsidiary, Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd, had transferred full ownership of KL Tower to problematic firm Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd in October last year, despite making healthy profits.
Separately, Gobind pointed out that there has been little progress in the case of an individual previously arrested for threatening Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
However, he bemoaned the fact that two SPM students were arrested on Saturday over a viral video of one of the suspects uttering abusive words against question setters of the history paper and insulting Singapore.
“Yes, police have power, but the discretion is theirs. We see how multiple reports were made on major cases but no action is taken. Please look into this seriously.
“If you want to fight corruption, show that you are serious, and ensure the cases we raise in this house are resolved...I hope the relevant minister can answer,” he said. – The Vibes, February 27, 2023
