KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians can breathe a sigh of relief as Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, as initially scheduled.
This debunks earlier speculations that Malaysians will celebrate Raya a day sooner.
Keeper of the Ruler’s Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad announced this at 8pm after the sighting of the new moon earlier today.
“In keeping with the command of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, following the consent of the rulers, I hereby declare that the date for Hari Raya Puasa for the states in Malaysia has been set for Saturday, April 22, 2023,” he said.
Last year, Raya was celebrated a day earlier than scheduled, which led to Malaysians scrambling to make preparations and travel back to their hometowns.
The last-minute announcement caused massive traffic congestion and panic-buying nationwide.
In the spirit of this year’s Raya celebration, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional national public holiday.
He also announced that the government will waive toll fees nationwide between April 19-21 and 24, in conjunction with the festive season.
