KUALA LUMPUR – The family of a former aide to fugitive Low Taek Jho has called for an end to the speculation surrounding Kee Kok Thiam’s sudden death two days ago.
Law firm Valen, Oh, and Partners, who is representing the family, said in a brief statement that Kee died in hospital on Monday due to a sudden massive stroke.
“We urge all parties not to entertain any speculation on this unfortunate event and allow the family the space to grieve on his passing,” said the statement.
Yesterday, Malay Mail reported that a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source confirmed Kee’s death.
Kee was reportedly deported from Macau less than a month ago for allegedly overstaying his visa and is believed to have informed local authorities of Low’s whereabouts.
The news site also reported that Kee was questioned by MACC on May 3 where he told investigators that he met other fugitives – Eric Tan Kim Loong, Casey Tang Keng Chee, Geh Choh Heng, and Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil – wanted in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal.
Kee was once described as Low’s close associate and purportedly received 1MDB’s misappropriated funds through Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia.
Previously, Al Jazeera reported that Kee said he was jailed for a month in 2021 by immigration authorities in Macau. – The Vibes, May 31, 2023
