KOTA KINABALU – Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president Datuk Arthur Kurup has rejected the call to place tolls on the Pan Borneo Highway.

He said federal roads in Sabah are main routes that connect districts, unlike in the peninsula where alternative toll-free roads are available.

He added that the federal government has assured that the highway will be toll-free.

“In the peninsula, users can choose tolled highways for faster travel or alternative toll-free routes. However, we do not have alternatives in Sabah.

“It is not fair to force Sabah road users to pay tolls without providing alternative routes,” said the Pensiangan MP in a statement here today.

Last week, Telupid assemblyman Jonnybone Kurum proposed in the state assembly to establish a toll system in Sabah’s part of the Pan Borneo Highway, as revenue can be used for maintenance work.

However, Kurup disagreed as a toll-free highway will help enhance the state’s economy and its people’s quality of life.

He added that the highway will help develop the state’s logistics industry and other businesses, contributing to economic growth. – The Vibes, May 31, 2023
