KUALA LUMPUR – While the Sg Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) meets all design specifications, its concessionaire will identify further areas for improvement following the death of a motorcyclist who fell 30m from the elevated highway after he was thrown off his vehicle.
Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) CEO Datuk Mohammad Azlan Abdullah expressed condolences over the death of the victim, who lost control of his Ducati Panigale while trying to avoid another motorcyclist riding against the flow of traffic yesterday.
Azlan said that following the accident, Prolintas will implement additional measures.
“Additional measures that can be taken include having additional warning signs at strategic locations,” Azlan was quoted saying by Astro Awani.
However, he also stressed that the elevated highway had been constructed according to all specifications.
He was speaking earlier today at the official launch of SUKE’s Phase Two from Sri Petaling to Ulu Kelang, which will be opened to traffic from midnight tonight.
Azlan also said Prolintas had submitted evidence recorded by the elevated highway’s monitoring systems on the Ducati’s accident to the police for investigations.
In a statement on Facebook yesterday after the tragedy, Prolintas reminded motorists to adhere to rules on speed limits and traffic direction.
“Excessive speed and driving against traffic flow significantly increase the likelihood of accidents, endangering not only the offenders but also other innocent highway users which can result in serious injuries and fatality,” Prolintas said.
In the incident yesterday, the Ducati rider, in his 60s, had been heading in the direction of Ampang to Hulu Klang.
Ampang Jaya district police chief Mohd Azam Ismail said the victim was executing a corner when a motorcycle suddenly emerged against the flow of traffic on the right shoulder of the road, causing the former to hit the left railings while trying to avoid the oncoming motorcycle.
He was thrown 30m onto the ground below and pronounced dead on the spot.
Police are using the SUKE CCTV system to identify the errant motorcyclist who fled after the incident, and urge witnesses to contact the nearest police station or Ampang Jaya traffic police investigating officer Muhamad Yusaiful Muhamat Basir at 011-1307-8348. – The Vibes, June 15, 2023
