SHAH ALAM – It is inappropriate for anyone to preempt the Selangor sultan’s announcement on when the state assembly will be dissolved, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said anyone who jumped the gun would breach the customs and principle of collective understanding practised by the state government on the dissolution date announcement, which requires guidance from the state palace.

“We have laws, customs and conventions to follow.

“So, to me it is inappropriate for any quarters to preempt the Selangor sultan in announcing the dissolution date for the state assembly.

“It is deemed to be against convention, customs and Malay culture,” he told a special press conference in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of his administration at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah here today.

On another matter, Amirudin said he fully supports the sultan’s call for those campaigning in the coming state elections to steer clear of issues concerning religion, race and other sensitive issues which can jeopardise harmony and unity.

When speaking at a ceramah in Tg Karang previously, Selangor Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali had said that the Selangor assembly would be dissolved today.

Amirudin said he was granted an audience by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah this morning for the purpose of seeking His Royal Highness’s consent to dissolve the 14th Selangor assembly on June 23.

“At 10am, the Selangor sultan gave his consent and signed the dissolution proclamation for the 14th Selangor state assembly, which will take effect on June 23 in accordance with Clause (2) Article LXX, Part Two of the Selangor government constitution.

“This will enable the Selangor assembly speaker to officially inform the Election Commission, expected to be on Friday, and this will pave the way for the Selangor state election to be held,” he said. – Bernama, June 19, 2023
