PETALING JAYA –  Hard work and mixing well with the people is the only way to win support from voters for the coming state election, said Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Ahmad Akhir Pawan Chik.

He said he has been campaigning constantly since nomination day by visiting as many constituents as he can in Taman Medan, a Selangor seat.

He added he has daily walkabouts to meet the people and to present his views and plans for the constituency.

“I meet people constantly to develop a relationship with them. Most of the voters in Taman Medan know me as I have been their representative with the Petaling Jaya City Council for over 12 years before being named as the candidate.

“People here know that I am ever willing to help them. I have extended assistance to people when part of Taman Medan was hit by floods and I have also ensured people received help during the Covid-19 lockdown.”

He said he is working as hard as possible to ensure a PH victory in Taman Medan and is hoping for a 4,000-vote majority.

Akhir said it is important for voters, especially the Indians and Chinese, to go out and vote because staying home will not help PH achieve victory.

He added no one should assume PH will win and every vote will make a difference.

He said he has been emphasising during all his rallies the importance of everyone going out to vote to give PH a thumping victory.

“If the Indian and Chinese voters in Taman Medan fail to go out to vote it could have an impact on the majority and even the outcome of the election.

“My advice to voters is no matter what time you are supposed to vote, please go out early and vote. Then you can go ahead and carry on with your own work. You might get too busy doing your work and miss out on the opportunity to vote.”

Akhir said there were challenges being faced by PH in Taman Medan as there were a number of Barisan Nasional members, especially from Umno who were not happy with the idea of the unity government.

He added they left Barisan Nasional (BN) – but not in any significant numbers – and are now working with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Taman Medan.

He said his challenger Dr Afif Bahardin (PN) is a newcomer to the constituency and he is unknown to the voters in Taman Medan.

He said Afif had served as a Penang State Legislative Assembly member for Seberang Jaya from May 2013 until March 2023.

Afif resigned from PH and joined Bersatu in March 2020 during the Sheraton Move

Akhir said Afif contested in Shah Alam in the 15th general election, where he lost to Amanah’s Azli Yusof by about 18,000 votes before he decided to contest in Taman Medan.

He said to ensure a PH victory in Taman Medan, he had also spoken to the local leaders of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress.

He added that there are about 900 to 1,000 members who are voters, and as they are part of BN, the leaders have promised to help during the polls for a PH win.

Akhir said he had also met with local MIC leaders who have expressed their willingness to help get voters out to support PH in the elections. – The Vibes, August 9, 2023
