MIRI – The youth in the state must play an active part in all public events and programmes organised in conjunction with the Merdeka month celebrations.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan today said the youth in the state must show a keen interest for them to know and understand how valuable Merdeka is to the state and country.
“I want to see more young people involved in our Merdeka events, such as the statewide Merdeka convoy.
“The youth of today were born way after Merdeka and were not physically involved in the events leading to the historic Merdeka Day (the federal-level independence event that took place on August 31, 1957).
“Our youths must therefore learn about all these events in order to understand and cherish Merdeka and MA63.
“They must take an active part in the many Merdeka events we are having now, such as the Merdeka convoy, as these events publicise the meaning of Merdeka,” he said when greeting the Merdeka convoy in Lawas town.
Awang Tengah is also the state assemblyman for Lawas.
As for MA63, he said that the Sarawak government is confident that the federal government will soon restore all the rights accorded to the state under the agreement.
“Putrajaya has already agreed in principle to return autonomy in education and health as well as in other matters to this state.
“We will continue to pursue all the other rights,” he stressed.
The Merdeka convoy being held throughout the state will end in Kuching on August 31 to coincide with National Day. – The Vibes, August 14, 2023
