GEORGE TOWN – A Russian woman and her Yemeni son who went missing while hiking at Penang National Park in Teluk Bahang here, have been found alive by a group of rescuers headed by firemen and park rangers here earlier today.

Ksenia Mayorova, 38, and Akram Nasser Saleh, 13, were found by rescuers in Pantai Acheh at about 12.27pm, some five hours after they reportedly went missing.

The Teluk Bahang Fire and Rescue station was alerted about the missing duo at about 9.30am.

Good weather coupled with the massive deployment of firemen and rangers had helped the search party to zero into the area where the two foreign tourists were last seen.

The duo lost their way after becoming disorientated by the jungle covering at the Penang National Park.

They had embarked on a hike in the predawn hours with a group of other tourists, but when they did not show up at the rendezvous point, a search was subsequently launched in the coastal forestry reserve.

A spokesman with the Teluk Bahang fire station confirmed that the pair were located within hours, and they were surrendered to police to aid in investigations.

“They were tired but in relatively good health. Just exhausted,” said the spokesman.

Earlier the fire department’s operations officer Wan Abd Malik Wan Husain told journalists here that when they arrived at the scene, they were told about the missing duo in the jungle.

“The two were hiking. They could not be contacted due to poor network at the site,” he reportedly said. – The Vibes, August 22, 2023
