KUALA LUMPUR – The new attorney-general and his predecessor Tan Sri Idrus Harun will be called up by the Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Election and Institutional Reform to explain the decision to withdraw corruption charges on Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Committee chairman William Leong (PH-Selayang) said Idrus, whose term expired on September 5, and Datuk Terrirudin Mohd Salleh will be called in as the case is a matter of public interest.

"We will present a report to Parliament once proceedings conclude," he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Earlier, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) questioned the status of the emergency motions filed by PN MPs on the outcome of Zahid's recent case.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul had assured the opposition bloc that the matter would be raised after the 12th Malaysia Plan’s mid-term review was tabled yesterday.

Shahidan however claimed that he was unaware of such a statement.

However, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tong (PH-Kota Melaka), who is a member of the special select committee, noted that Shahidan too is a member.

"Why is Arau trying to stir up the matter when a decision has been made and the circular has already been shared?” asked Khoo.

Following the high court's decision to grant Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA), the Attorney-General’s Chambers stated that there were cogent reasons for the decision.

Last Friday, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal filed an emergency motion for the AG to explain in Parliament the decision to grant  Zahid a DNAA. – The Vibes, September 12, 2023
