SIBU – The Padi Rice Regulatory Division here said checks revealed that there was no plastic material found in rice being sold here as alleged in viral social media videos.

Sibu branch chief Mohamad Izzwan Ibrahim today said they had carried out ground checks after the allegations while the supplier had also come forward to lodge a report.

“We view such allegations seriously. A field investigation was carried out and rice samples collected at the supplier’s premises and sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis.

“The preliminary tests so far did not find any plastic materials,” he said in a press statement.

Izzwan said rice imported into the state and country had to go through safety certifications at the port of entry.

A safety certificate needs to be furnished by the exporter and Padiberas Nasional Bhd too, he said.

Members of the public who had found plastic materials in rice in Sibu or other places should go to his office to lodge a report, he said.

Those making false allegations on social media can be penalised, he warned. – The Vibes, October 11, 2023
