MIRI – Two Indonesian workers working in an oil palm plantation died when fire broke out inside their cabin that was constructed using modified steel-cargo containers.

The incident happened at about 6am today in the plantation in Kg Telong in the Niah district, about 120 km south of Miri city.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today said the remains of the two Indonesian men were found inside their cabin in the aftermath of the fire.

The two are identified as Jaya, 30 and Hery, 35.

“The remains of the two were found inside their cabin that was constructed out of steel containers.

“The interior of the structure caught fire,” the department said in a statement today. 

“Firemen from Batu Niah station rushed to the site but found the inside of the cabin already on fire.

The two were found dead inside. Other workers who were there managed to escape the flames.

The remains of the two had been handed over to police. – The Vibes, October 19, 2023
