MIRI - Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) - the main component party in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) - has passed a resolution seeking the creation of more new state and parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak.

PBB delegates in a special party convention held last night in Sibu, said Sarawak needs new state and parliamentary seats to meet the increase in population.

PBB vice-president Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said there is a need for the federal authorities to allow Sarawak to have additional state and parliamentary seats.

Currently Sarawak has 82 state constituencies and 31 parliamentary seats.

Dr Annuar, who chaired the PBB Sibu Special  Convention, said the current state and parliamentary seats needed to be re-delineated as soon as possible.

"We in PBB feel that there must be more parliamentary constituencies created in Sarawak and within these parliamentary constituencies, there needs to be more state constituencies created as well.

"This is to reflect the increase in our population and also social-economic activities and expansion of administrative areas.

"We need more seats so the people can be served better," he said.

Dr Annuar said the party will discuss how more state and parliamentary seats ought to be created in Sarawak.

The party also passed seven other resolutions, on education, infrastructure projects, continuous support for the Unity Government in Putrajaya, the pursuit of Sarawak rights within Malaysia, modernisation of agriculture and the pursuit of infrastructure and public amenities in more remote locations.

Dr Annuar who is also Deputy Minister for Education, Talent Development and Technological Research said PBB will continue to be the backbone of the GPS. - The Vibes, November 6, 2023
