MALAYSIA has successfully completed its fifth term as ASEAN Chair, a role it previously held in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. Each tenure has cemented the country’s position in regional diplomacy, with this latest chairmanship standing out for its strategic achievements and inclusive leadership.
“Malaysia has acted as an honest mediator in the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, facilitating the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement,” said Komander (Hon.) Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim, highlighting the nation’s role in fostering regional stability.
The agreement underscores Malaysia’s commitment to ASEAN centrality and to maintaining the bloc as a primary platform for addressing regional issues.

Under Malaysia’s leadership, ASEAN has progressed from simply reducing trade barriers to deeper economic integration, including successful negotiations in the digital economy.
The ASEAN 2025 Summit embraced the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” with the adoption of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Inclusive Green Growth, signalling the bloc’s commitment to circular economy practices and sustainable development.
Malaysia also oversaw the formal admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member, expanding the bloc’s reach and diversity.
Throughout the 47th ASEAN Summit, held from October 26 to 28 in Kuala Lumpur, more than 80 key outcomes were achieved across security, economic, maritime, and sustainable development domains.
“The presence of global leaders, including the Presidents of the United States and China and the UN Secretary-General, highlights ASEAN’s growing influence under Malaysia’s stewardship,” Dr Irmohizam said.
He emphasised that Malaysia’s chairmanship has raised ASEAN’s voice internationally through an inclusive, pragmatic, and visionary approach.
On the economic front, Malaysia facilitated the finalisation of key agreements, including the enhancement of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) 3.0, opening new opportunities in digital and green sectors and benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Highlighting global partnerships, U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed, “America is with you 100 per cent, and we aim to be a strong partner and friend for future generations.
“Together, we will create extraordinary prosperity for countries on both sides of the Pacific.” The U.S. also granted tariff exemptions on 1,711 Malaysian export products, while retaining a 19 per cent duty on the rest, reflecting a balance of trade and diplomacy.
Malaysia’s leadership extended to the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China summits, strengthening three-way cooperation on trade, investment, education, and sustainable development.
The combined ASEAN-GCC-China economy represents a population of 2.15 billion and a GDP of US$24.87 trillion, illustrating the potential for regional and interregional growth.
By strategically leveraging its chairmanship, Malaysia has not only reinforced ASEAN’s cohesion but also boosted its own diplomatic stature, economic influence, and global image.
“Malaysia’s leadership has positioned the nation as a credible diplomat and peace facilitator, demonstrating that principled, inclusive, and forward-looking engagement yields tangible benefits for both the country and the region,” Dr Irmohizam added.
