MALAYSIA’S Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim have ended a 34-year wait for the country’s girls’ doubles crown at the World Junior Badminton Championships, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hailing their victory as a historic milestone for national badminton.

In a Facebook post, Anwar congratulated the pair on winning the title at the 2026 championships in Cairo, Egypt, describing their achievement as a proud moment for the country.

“A proud achievement! Congratulations to Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim on winning the girls’ doubles title at the World Junior Badminton Championships. A new chapter in the history of Malaysian badminton!

“Well done. Keep up the momentum and continue to bring glory to Malaysia!” he said.

The second-seeded Malaysian pair showed composure under pressure to defeat Japan’s Nijika Kamata and Shizuku Kashio 15-7, 9-15, 15-12 in a 41-minute final.

The victory secured Malaysia’s first title in the event since 1992, ending a 34-year drought and marking a significant breakthrough for the country’s junior women’s doubles programme. - October 18, 2026
