THE long-delayed Malaysia Sports School Perlis is expected to begin full operations next year, bringing an end to a 12-year wait for the completion of the sports education facility, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.
In a Facebook post today, Anwar said the school was expected to be completed this year, following efforts by the Education Ministry to resolve problems that had stalled the project for more than a decade.
He congratulated Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek and the ministry for resolving the issue within less than two years.
Anwar said he had instructed that the project be expedited after it was raised during his visit to Perlis in April last year by then Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
“Insya-Allah, the school will be completed this year and can begin operating next year.
“After being abandoned for 12 years, Alhamdulillah, the MADANI Government has resolved the issue in less than two years,” he said.
The project, which involves the development of a specialised sports school complex, began with a groundbreaking ceremony in 2013 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2014.
On April 27 last year, Anwar directed that the project be handed over to a capable government-linked company to ensure construction could be completed as soon as possible.
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah had previously said the project was expected to be completed in January 2027, with construction progress then at about 60 per cent. - October 30, 2026
