JOHOR BAHRU – National weightlifter Muhamad Aznil Bidin has booked his ticket to the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the 61-kilogramme (kg) category after winning gold in the qualifying tournament held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan yesterday.

Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) president Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the qualifiers, held together with the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships, also saw the Kedahan finish fifth overall out of 16 lifters.

“He managed to lift 120kg in the snatch and 153kg in the clean and jerk for a 273kg total,” he said in a statement today.

Muhamad Aznil, 27, won the gold medal in the men’s 62kg weight class at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Budding national weightlifter Mohamad Aniq Kasdan had earlier come out tops in the qualifiers on Tuesday (December 7) to book his spot in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the men’s 55kg category.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Erry Hidayat will be hoping to be the third Malaysian to check into the Birmingham Commonwealth Games when he competes against 10 other lifters in the men’s 73kg category at 10pm (local time) today.

The championships, which began on December 7, will end on December 17. – Bernama, December 10, 2021
