KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s badminton duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani win the German Open after defeating China’s Liu Yu Chen-Ou Xuan Yi 23-21, 16-21, 21-14 in the finals.

At the Westenergie Sporthalle in Muelheim An Der Ruhr today, the world number 18 pair went toe-to-toe with the Chinese duo and came from behind to win the first set.

However, they failed to seal the win in the second set and were forced to head to the rubber set showdown for the title.

Although it seemed that Izzuddin had a slight sprain in his right knee in the third set, the pair kept their momentum and clinched the win.

In the other finals, Thai shuttler Kunlavut Vitidsarn became the men’s singles champion after defeating India’s Lakshya Sen 21-18, 21-15.

Vitidsarn knocked out world number seven Lee Zii Jia yesterday in the semi-finals 21-13, 21-12.

Thai mixed doubles pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai made quick work of China’s Ou Xuan Yi-Huang Ya Qiong to win the tournament in 35 minutes with a score of 21-11, 21-9.

Meanwhile, it was an all-China affair for the women’s singles final as He Bing Jiao took the title after battling an hour to win 21-14, 27-25 against fellow compatriot and world number three Chen Yu Fei.

For the women’s doubles, it took China’s top seeded Cheng Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan almost two hours to secure the win after Bulgarian sisters Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva came from behind to force a rubber set. The final score was 21-16, 29-30, 21-19. – The Vibes, March 14, 2022.
