KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia came from behind to beat Uruguay 2-1 to qualify for the ninth-12th placing playoff in the Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup in Potchefstroom, South Africa yesterday.
In their ninth-16th placing playoff, Malaysia fell behind when Uruguay’s Elisa Civetta scored through a penalty corner in the 35th minute in the third quarter.
However, the Malaysian squad, coached by Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim, bounced back with two quick goals in the fourth quarter, through Siti Nur Arfah Mohd Nor’s effort in the 53rd minute and Nuramirah Shakirah Zulkifl’s strike one minute later.
The score stayed at 2-1 until the final whistle, enabling Malaysia to meet Ireland in the ninth-12th placing playoff tomorrow morning.
Malaysia had failed to qualify for the quarter-finals after finishing last in Group D with just one point.
Malaysia were thrashed 10-0 by Germany in their opening match, followed by a 3-3 draw with Wales and 4-0 loss to India. – Bernama, April 8, 2022
