KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is one step away from sweeping all eight medals in the diving category after Muhammad Syafiq Puteh won gold in the men’s individual 3m springboard, while Gabriel Gilbert Daim claims the silver medal.

Syafiq, 27, had a stellar performance as his first dive saw him score the highest in the event at 70.50. His total score was 381.35 with the breakdown being 70.50, 69.75, 64.60, 54.00, 52.50, 70.00.

Sabah-born Gabriel scored a total of 357.30 to secure the second spot on the podium with his score for the six rounds being 69.00, 55.20, 65.10, 49.50, 52.50, 66.00.

Chawanwat Juntaphadawon from Thailand came in third with a score of 340.35.

This is Malaysia’s eighth gold medal in the games after silat exponents Muhammad Taqiyuddin Hamid and Sazzlan Yuga won gold in the men’s seni ganda event earlier today.

Speaking to reporters outside the My Dinh Aquatics Centre, Syafiq said although he won gold, he is not completely satisfied with his performance.

“It was good but not my best, I had an advantage because my dives had a higher difficulty level.

“The pressure was high, we targeted gold and I am happy as this is my first individual gold medal,” he said.

Syafiq also dedicated his gold medal win to his child whose birthday is tomorrow. – The Vibes, May 11, 2022
