KUALA LUMPUR – Mixed doubles player Chan Peng Soon plans to use the Malaysia Masters 2022 as a stepping stone for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
As the Super 500 event begins tomorrow, this will only be the fourth tournament that Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See are paired together.
The 34-year-old admitted that their form is still unstable because they have yet to perfect their playing technique.
“When I look back at my performance at the Malaysia Open, I admit that it was not my best one.
“We are still a bit confused with our technique, but we will try our best to improve.
“Our target would be the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. If we could perform better in the Malaysia Masters as compared to the Open, then we would be on the right track for the Commonwealth,” he said.
In the opening round of the Malaysia Open last week, Peng Soon-Yee See succumbed to Indonesia’s duo Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, 9-21, 21-12, 22-20,
Peng Soon shared that he might have been too relaxed when playing at the Super 750 tournament, adding that he hoped to be more aggressive and will work on his communication with his 26-year-old partner.
When met at the test-court session today at Axiata Arena, Peng Soon added that he felt more confident to play in the arena as the drift feels better than the previous week.
“The drift feels a lot better today than last week and seeing that this is my second week here (at Axiata Arena), I feel much more confident to play (for the Malaysia Masters).”
In 2017, the mixed doubles pair claimed their first international title after winning the Russian Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Tournament in Vladivostok, Russia.
Peng Soon was formerly partnered with Goh Liu Ying, who are still ranked number eight in the BWF mixed doubles rankings.
