KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) today announced its approval for US$20,000 (RM88,890) for the use of sports science methodologies in players’ daily training.
Its president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the system will be put in place to strengthen high-performance athletes in Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM).
The areas covered by the funding are performance plans, data-driven management, monitoring reviews, sports science, optimising coaching practices, as well as enforcing culture and creating a conducive environment to strengthen players’ character.
BAM approved the systems proposed by high-performance director Tim Jones when he presented the plan to the council meeting today.
“There is a system that he (Jones) proposed just now to look at all angles of conditioning and technical performance of all our players.
“The budget we are looking at is US$20,000 a year and has been approved in an effort to strengthen our players further through the use of technical data and performance analysis,” Norza told the press after the BAM council meeting held at ABM in Bukit Kiara, today.
BAM also announced today a total of RM245,000 in incentives for players and coaches following their successes at the 2021 Hanoi SEA Games and the recently concluded 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Chen Tang Jie and Peck Yen Wei were awarded RM30,000 for ending the country’s 23-year wait for a SEA Games badminton mixed doubles gold.
Their win was the country’s first gold in the event since Chew Choon Eng-Chor Hooi Yee won it in 1999.
Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah received RM50,000 for winning gold in the women’s doubles, while bronze medallist pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik for the men’s doubles, and Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles, received RM7,500 each.
National no 1 men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong received RM10,000 for his silver medal finish in the men’s singles.
Meanwhile, RM140,000 was awarded to members of the Commonwealth Games mixed team, which is Malaysia’s fourth mixed team gold after Melbourne in 2006, New Delhi in 2010 and Glasgow in 2014. – The Vibes, August 13, 2022
