KUALA LUMPUR – Lee Zii Jia put up another resilient performance at the ongoing World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, while Ng Tze Yong crashed out.

Zii Jia, ranked 13th in the world, ensured his place in the last 16 after disposing of Canadian Brian Yang 21-11, 21-16 in the second round after a 33-minute match at the Royal Arena early today.

However, Tze Yong’s second World Championships outing came to halt as early as the second round, after going down fighting against 12th seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark 24-22, 21-16 to crash the hopes of having an all Malaysian affair in the last 16.

Zii Jia is set to challenge Antonsen in the battle for a quarter-finals berth, later today.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik started their title defence in a shaky way, before bouncing back from a set down to eliminate the hosts, world number 31 Jeppe Bay-Lasse Molhede, 18-21, 21-14, 21-16 after a 54-minute battle.

The world number four duo, who had a first round bye, will take on 14th seeded Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei next.

In the women’s doubles, professional shuttlers Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien had to bow out to Japanese world number five Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota 21-11, 21-14. – Bernama, August 24, 2023
