THE Pakatan Harapan candidate who lost the Sungai Bakap election last year is ready for another fight for the constitution
A by-election for the Penang state seat was called when its PAS assemblyman, Nor Zamri Latiff, died on May 14.
A date has yet to be fixed for the polls.
Penang PKR women chief Nurhidayah Che Rose is ready to stand again if she is fielded.
In the election last August, Nurhidayah lost to Nor Zamri by 1,563 votes in a straight fight.
"God willing, I am ready to represent PH-Barisan Nasional if given the opportunity. It will be my chance to make up for my narrow defeat in last year’s election," Nurhidayah was quoted as saying in Malaysiakini today.
"However, the leadership will choose the candidate. I’ll leave it to the party and PKR president (Anwar Ibrahim),"
She said PH has reserved the Sungai Bakap seat for women candidates.
Sungai Bakap, which is in the Nibong Tebal parliamentary seat, is a predominantly Malay seat. Malay voters make up 59.4% of the electorate, Chinese (22.5%), Indian (17.4%), and others (0.7%).
The other two seats in the parliamentary constituency, Jawi and Sungai Acheh, are held by PH-BN.
The Nibong Tebal seat is held by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
The Election Commission will meet June 6 to discuss the Sungai Bakap by-election.
Meanwhile, PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said his party has shortlisted the candidates for the seat.
"We do have candidates, but we haven't finalised our choice yet because Penang PAS has its own considerations. We prefer not to interfere… as they are more familiar with the local candidates,” he was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times. – May 31, 2024.
