SABAH Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said there should be no confusion about the significance of 31 August as National Day and Sabah Day.
He stated that the double celebration is a catalyst for all races in Sabah to unite and develop the state, making this year’s celebration momentous.
“Sabah Day reminds us of the end of British colonial rule on 31 August 1963, marking the start of self-government for the state before the formation of Malaysia. Sabahans, especially the younger generation, must be well-versed in our history, not only about National Day but also Sabah Day. More importantly, we must focus on developing and seeing Sabah progress in Malaysia,” he said.
Hajiji made these remarks during the launch of the National Month, Sabah Day, and the flying of the Jalur Gemilang Flag at Kota Kinabalu City Hall today.
31 August has been a point of contention for many in Sabah, as the government used to mark the day as Malaysia’s independence day, which falls on 31 August 1957.
The resentment among the people of Sabah stems from the fact that Malaysia only came into existence on 16 September 1963.
Sabah Day originated from an emergency motion introduced at the North Borneo Legislative Council on 8 August 1963. The motion aimed to reaffirm the council’s previous decision that Sabah should attain independence by joining Malaysia on 31 August 1963.
This motion was introduced by the then-chief minister designate Donald Stephens. Council president Governor Sir William Goode allowed the motion, and it was subsequently passed.
The day became widely known as Sabah Day, marking the state’s attainment of self-governance. – August 1, 2024.
