KUALA LUMPUR – Several PKR Youth leaders have been called in by the police for questioning tomorrow after they staged a convoy protest against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki yesterday.
Party Youth chief Akmal Nasir said they have been summoned to the Putrajaya police district headquarters, with the investigation being conducted under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Other than Akmal, among those who will be questioned are PKR Youth vice-chief S. Thiban, Batu MP and Federal Territories PKR Youth chief P. Prabakaran and secretary Syukri Razak.
“While we will be providing full cooperation to the police, intimidation against whistle-blowers and pressure groups must cease immediately,” Akmal said in a statement today.
Rather than pursuing investigations against these individuals, the Johor Baru MP said it is better if Azam asked to go on leave pending a full probe on him.
“Unfortunately, the government, especially Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, is seen to be passive and does not appear bothered by the calls from various quarters to restore integrity.”
Unperturbed by the police’s intimidation tactics, Akmal said PKR Youth will continue to apply pressure until the integrity crisis is taken seriously by the government.
As such, he said the party’s youth wing will be submitting a “People’s Memorandum” to Parliament when the Dewan Rakyat convenes for its special sitting on January 20.
Yesterday, some 50 PKR Youth members took part in a protest convoy against Azam from Dataran Putra in Putrajaya to the MACC’s headquarters.
The members also handed over a memorandum to the anti-graft body upon reaching the location.
Azam has been embroiled in controversy after it was revealed last month that he had purchased millions of shares in 2015.
On January 5, Anti-Corruption Advisory Board chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang cleared Azam of any wrongdoing, saying the board was satisfied by the latter’s explanation that the shares purchased were actually bought by his brother under his name. – The Vibes, January 11, 2022
