AT least 21 people have been confirmed dead after a landslide struck a valley in Tanchang County in China's north-western Gansu Province, bringing search and rescue operations to an end, state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday.
The landslide occurred early on Monday morning, trapping 33 people beneath debris.
State news agency Xinhua reported most of those affected were residents from nearby villages employed as temporary labourers at a state-owned forestry farm located within the valley.
Rescue teams searched the area following the disaster before authorities concluded operations after recovering the victims.
The mountainous region, characterised by steep valleys and intersecting rivers, is highly susceptible to natural disasters, including flash floods and landslides, particularly during the annual rainy season. - July 8, 2026
