THE US military has confirmed the death of another American service member in the conflict with Iran, raising the number of US military fatalities to 17 since the war began on February 28.
The deaths highlight the dangers faced by American forces deployed across the Middle East, where troops remain vulnerable to drone attacks, missile strikes and aviation-related incidents despite not being directly engaged in large-scale ground combat.
AP reported President Donald Trump saying that the war is necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, as fighting intensified following the collapse of peace negotiations.
The first American fatalities occurred shortly after hostilities began, when an Iranian drone strike on a civilian port in Kuwait killed six US soldiers on February 28.
The soldiers, who belonged to a supply and logistics unit based in Iowa, were working inside a shipping container-style facility that lacked defensive protection at the time of the attack.
A seventh US service member died more than a week later after being wounded in an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 1.
Later that month, six American service members were killed when a KC-135 refuelling aircraft supporting US military operations against Iran crashed in Iraq.
The US Central Command said the aircraft had been operating in friendly airspace when an unspecified incident involving another aircraft occurred.
On Monday, the US Navy reported that a pilot had died following a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea. The Navy initially described the July 1 incident as an emergency landing and said there was no indication that the crash was caused by hostile action.
Three other sailors aboard the helicopter were rescued.
The latest casualties came as drones and missiles continued to pose a threat to US forces in the region.
On Saturday, US Central Command said two American service members were killed in Jordan on Friday while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.
A third service member was reported missing following the attack, with the military later confirming that unidentified remains had been recovered and were undergoing examination.
The latest US military death occurred on Saturday in northern Iraq, where an American service member was killed during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to US Central Command.
A second service member suffered minor injuries and was receiving medical treatment.
The military said further details, including the identities of those killed, would be withheld until 24 hours after families had been notified.
The conflict has also caused casualties beyond US forces.
Iranian authorities have reported at least 50 deaths and more than 500 injuries from US strikes over the past three weeks, including eight people killed in a strike on a bridge on Friday.
Workers aboard vessels, foreign labourers and civilians in Gulf countries, Israel and Lebanon have also been killed as the conflict continues to spread across the region. - July 20, 2026
