A FOREIGN tourist in his 30s was injured after being attacked by a bear near an observation deck on the shores of Lake Towada in Aomori Prefecture on Saturday.

Japan Today reported local authorities said the incident occurred at about 10.10am, with the man suffering injuries including a bite to his right arm.

He was transported to hospital by medical helicopter, and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The bear’s whereabouts remained unknown, prompting authorities to step up warnings to tourists in the area.

Officials are urging visitors to exercise caution through public safety radio announcements and patrols around Lake Towada.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the area as efforts to locate the bear continue. - August 23, 2026
