A 5.3-magnitude earthquake strikes West Papua on Wednesday morning - September 2, 2026

A 5.3-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck West Papua, Indonesia, this morning, but there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The earthquake was detected at 8.04am, with its epicentre located about 159 kilometres southwest of Jayapura at a depth of 60 kilometres.

It was recorded at coordinates 3.4 degrees south and 139.6 degrees east.

The tremor was the second moderate earthquake to hit the region within a day.

The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao in the Philippines at 1.22pm local time on Tuesday.

The epicentre was initially recorded at a depth of 122.4 kilometres, at latitude 5.17 degrees north and longitude 125.90 degrees east.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage from either earthquake. -September 2, 2026
