A QUARTER-CENTURY of charitable fundraising will reach a defining moment this weekend as the Charity Jam Session (CJS) aims to surpass RM4 million in lifetime donations while bidding farewell to the man who transformed a one-off community concert into one of Malaysia’s longest-running grassroots fundraising initiatives.

The event, as in previous years, will see a unique alliance of musicians, chefs, hoteliers, volunteers and corporate supporters gather with a singular purpose: to transform entertainment into tangible support for some of Malaysia’s most vulnerable communities.

This weekend, that collective effort is expected to reach a historic milestone.

The 25th edition of Charity Jam Session (CJS), taking place on Sunday, (7 June) at the RP Entertainment Centre, The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur, is projected to push cumulative fundraising beyond RM4 million, cementing its position as one of Malaysia’s most enduring and successful grassroots charitable initiatives.

The Silver Jubilee celebration comes at a defining moment for the organisation. Not only does it mark 25 years of uninterrupted fundraising, it also represents the final event under the stewardship of founding organising chairman SS Rajaa, who has led the initiative since its inception in 2000.

Over the past two-and-a-half decades, CJS has raised RM3,856,403.92 through a community-driven model that relies on volunteerism, sponsorships, food and beverage sales, donations and public participation.

Organisers believe this year's edition could finally propel the initiative beyond the RM4 million threshold.

While the event is widely recognised for its music and festive atmosphere, its greatest impact has been felt far from the stage.

A significant portion of funds raised over the years has been channelled to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at University Malaya Medical Centre, helping support the care of critically ill children requiring specialised treatment and equipment.

Reflecting on the initiative's legacy, Rajaa said: “This heart-to-heart care that we all put in over the years has been channelled to PICU.”

His departure after the Silver Jubilee event will conclude a remarkable 25-year chapter that transformed a modest community gathering into a nationally recognised fundraising platform.

According to Food Aid Foundation General Manager Afraz Said, RM2.84 million has been contributed directly to the paediatric intensive care unit throughout the initiative’s history.

“Last year RM112,746.70 was distributed to four organisations, including PICU and FAF,” he said.

“The gap is still big and we are trying to close it.”

The need for continued support remains pressing. Beyond healthcare, Charity Jam Session also supports food assistance programmes managed by Food Aid Foundation, which reported redistributing nearly RM2.2 million worth of surplus food to vulnerable communities last year amid increasing economic challenges and rising living costs.

Healthcare professionals say the event continues to play a meaningful role in strengthening medical services for critically ill children.

Paediatric consultant Dr Chuah Soo Lin of University Malaya Medical Centre said funds generated through the programme help secure specialised medical equipment while supporting broader welfare initiatives that benefit families facing hardship.

Support for the event extends across the hospitality industry, which has long regarded Charity Jam Session as a model of meaningful corporate and community collaboration.

President of the Malaysian Association of Hotels, Datin Christina Toh, said: “We stand behind PICU as it involves saving lives.”

For the host venue, the Silver Jubilee edition represents a return to familiar surroundings. The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur previously hosted Charity Jam Session for nine consecutive years and remains one of its strongest long-term supporters.

Its Director of Sales and Marketing, Ida Izyani, said the event demonstrates the broader role hospitality can play in society.

“Hospitality is not only to welcome guests and serve guests. It is bringing people together for a meaningful cause and giving back to the community,” she said.

The fundraising marathon will run from noon until midnight and feature twelve consecutive hours of live performances by Sharin Band, Stag, Mojo Hand, Vishnu & Friends, Infinity, Karisma Band, The Cauliflower Robbery, Steele, Chemistry, Sunny & Friends, Night Grooves and Small Stones.

In keeping with its community-focused philosophy, there will be no admission charge. Instead, donations will be generated through food and beverage coupon sales priced at RM18 each or RM180 per booklet of ten coupons, alongside auctions, prize draws and direct public contributions.

Organisers say the Silver Jubilee is intended not merely as a celebration of past achievements but as a launchpad for the initiative’s future under a new leadership team.

As the final notes fade on Sunday evening, the event will symbolise more than the conclusion of a day-long festival.

It will mark the culmination of a 25-year mission that has united industries, communities and individuals around a common purpose: improving the lives of children in critical care, supporting families in need and proving that collective generosity can deliver lasting social change.

Should the RM4 million milestone be achieved, it will stand as a fitting tribute to a movement built not on grand institutions or government mandates, but on the enduring belief that music, hospitality and compassion can together become a force capable of saving lives while seeing the culmination of Rajaa’s priceless contribution. - June 4, 2026
