WELSH music legend Bonnie Tyler, the unmistakable voice behind the worldwide hit “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”, has died in hospital in Portugal at the age of 75, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry and beyond.

Tyler’s family announced her death on Facebook, saying they were “heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for”.

Known for her powerful husky vocals, distinctive blonde hair and signature black eyeliner, Tyler became one of Britain’s most recognisable performers and was widely regarded as the queen of the 1980s power ballad.

AFP reported former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his sadness over her passing, describing Tyler as “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists” whose music “continues to touch lives”.

Musicians and performers from around the world also paid tribute to the Welsh singer, remembering her unique voice, authenticity and enduring influence.

British rock star Rod Stewart wrote on Instagram that he and Tyler “shared similar styles of vocalising”, describing her as “a good pal, a true soul stirrer”.

Welsh-born Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who had Tyler perform at her wedding, said the singer was “an extraordinary woman with vocals to match”.

British pop icon Cliff Richard recalled that Tyler’s “infectious zest for life entertained so many around the world”, while Canadian singer Bryan Adams paid tribute on X, saying Tyler “had such a great voice” and thanking her for her “beautiful” rendition of a song he co-wrote.

Classical singer Katherine Jenkins hailed Tyler as “a true Welsh legend whose unmistakable voice inspired generations and put Wales on the world stage with such power, passion and authenticity”.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales, in 1951, Tyler grew up in a modest household with five siblings. Her father worked in coal mines while her mother was a housewife, and she left school at 16 with little expectation of achieving international fame.

Reflecting on her career in an interview with The Daily Telegraph in 2025, Tyler said: “The best thing I did was Total Eclipse Of The Heart. How can you ever possibly imagine it would still be so big today and people who weren't even born then would be singing it at karaoke?”

Before becoming a global star, Tyler worked in a grocery shop and performed in local venues. She initially adopted the stage name Sherene Davis to avoid confusion with fellow Welsh singer Mary Hopkin before talent scout Roger Bell discovered her performing at a Swansea nightclub in 1975.

She was later signed by RCA Records, where she adopted the name Bonnie Tyler, beginning a career that would span more than five decades.

Shortly after her breakthrough, Tyler underwent surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords. After failing to rest her voice sufficiently following the procedure, she developed the distinctive raspy tone that would become her trademark.

Her first major success came in 1978 with “It’s A Heartache”, but her career reached new heights in the 1980s when she moved towards a more rock-oriented sound.

Her defining moment arrived with “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”, written by American composer Jim Steinman. Released in 1983, the dramatic ballad transformed Tyler into an international superstar and remains one of rock music’s most celebrated songs.

More than four decades after its release, the song achieved more than one billion streams on Spotify in 2026. It has sold over six million copies worldwide, while its iconic music video has surpassed one billion views on YouTube.

At the height of her fame in 1984, Tyler released another major hit, “Holding Out For A Hero”, featured in the film “Footloose”.

Throughout her career, Tyler released 17 studio albums and received three Grammy Award nominations. In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe In Me”, finishing 19th.

Despite her global fame, Tyler remained known for her down-to-earth personality and continued to embrace her Welsh identity and accent. A fan of Tina Turner and French rock singer Johnny Hallyday, she divided her time between Wales and Portugal’s Algarve region with her husband, former judo athlete Robert Sullivan.

Tyler was also recognised for her contribution to music when she received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour from Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

In an interview with The Times in 2025, Tyler said she preferred a normal life away from celebrity excess.

“I live a very normal life and don't go around with bodyguards; I'm not Mariah Carey, darling. I'm always happy to take a selfie in front of the salad counter,” she said.

She also spoke about her enduring connection with audiences who continued to celebrate her biggest hit.

“People ask me if I get tired singing the old songs, but why wouldn't I love singing something like Total Eclipse of the Heart? As soon as I start one of those numbers, the whole audience sings it back to me – it's magic.” - July 10, 2026
