GEORGE TOWN – Penang's diverse range of living heritage and culture were evident today when the heritage regulator – George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) – selected more than 70 premises, organisations, and individuals to honour in conjunction with the 11th anniversary of the township as a Unesco world heritage site in July.

Despite the prevailing pandemic, the jury was given 107 nominations to honour for the annual recognition and awards ceremony. The esteemed panel settled for more than 70 this year.

They were saluted for their dedication towards sustaining the living heritage and outstanding universal values, by a panel led by Professor Emeritus Datin Paduka Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid (former director-general, National Heritage Department), Moe Chiba (programme specialist and head of Unit Culture, Unesco Office Jakarta), Dr Rohit Jigyasu (project manager, The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), Dr Paritta Chalermpow Koanantakool (former director, The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre), and Dr Ang Ming Chee (general manager of GTWHI).
