TWO and a half years is not really that long in the game scheme of things, but that’s how long it’s been since the contentious (to put it lightly) finale of the once beloved fantasy epic Game of Thrones.
The last two seasons of the show were particularly ridiculed – in sharp contrast to the high points of the series throughout its run. Who can forget the television event that was the Red Wedding or the numerous epic battle sequences that ended almost every season.
In fact, despite the lackluster (again, putting it lightly) end, it cannot be argued that Game of Thrones was not the most technically ambitious television series of all time. If only the writing held up its end of the bargain.
Now, as HBO seeks to expand its HBO Max service around the world – in this case Europe – it has released a brand new teaser trailer with actual footage from the prequel ‘House of the Dragon.’
Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will document the fall of House Targaryen – the ash blonde dragon riders who are the ancestors of the Khalessi herself.
Of course in the original show, Daenerys Targaryen was the last of her bloodline, so you just know this story is headed towards tragedy, which is fitting for Game of Thrones.
HBO had a number of other Game of Thrones prequels in the pipeline, including one that focused on the white walkers – the ancient threat that has haunted the world of Westeros for millenia. But with how that storyline fizzled in the final season, it’s no surprise they moved off that.
Dragons however have become one the series’ calling cards, which is to be no surprise as they grew in size along with the show to the point that they became some of the most technically spectacular creatures ever filmed.
There will likely be no shortage of dragons on this show, as HBO has never been known to spare the expense on their flagship shows. While not a lot is actually shown in the trailer, what there is looks expensive as hell.
After the missteps of the last two seasons – to fans at least, the show still raked in awards and blasted through ratings records – HBO knows to treat its golden goose well. Or should we say golden dragon. – The Vibes, October 6, 2021
