THE implementation of the Higher Education Development Plan 2026–2035 is being hailed as a transformative step towards building a more inclusive, competitive and socially just higher education ecosystem, according to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib, said the plan is fully aligned with UiTM’s strategic aspiration to become a premier university driving the development of Bumiputera professionals.

“Specifically, it supports efforts to widen access to quality education, nurture highly skilled talent and ensure that no student is left behind from the mainstream of higher education,” he said.

He highlighted several key initiatives under the plan that are particularly significant for UiTM, including guaranteed placement at public higher education institutions for outstanding students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 4.0, free education for students with disabilities, as well as free education and financial assistance for students from households classified as hardcore poor.

“These measures are expected to strengthen the principle of educational equity and social mobility, in line with UiTM’s role as an institution that champions the inclusive development agenda for Bumiputera,” he said in a statement issued today.

Shahrin also expressed full support for the addition of 3,000 new places in public universities in 2026, including in strategic fields such as Law, Accounting, Finance, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Communication and Media Studies.

“This move is seen as being in step with future labour market needs and the knowledge-based economic agenda,” he said.

He added that the emphasis on strengthening technical and vocational education and training, digital capabilities and the integration of artificial intelligence at polytechnics and community colleges is an important step towards producing a highly skilled workforce that remains relevant within the global industrial landscape.

The Vice-Chancellor also welcomed the announcement of an additional 5,000 student accommodation units through collaboration with government-linked investment companies, as well as improvements to the governance structure of Form Six and matriculation programmes under the Ministry of Higher Education from 2027.

He said these measures would enhance the continuity of education from pre-university to degree level while improving overall student wellbeing.

“In terms of nation-building, UiTM welcomes the renewed emphasis on General Studies subjects to be taught in the Malay language, with a stronger focus on the Constitution and Malaysian History,” he said.

“This is consistent with the university’s role in shaping graduates who are knowledgeable, grounded in national identity and uphold integrity.”

Shahrin also recorded UiTM’s highest appreciation and gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir for the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the nation’s higher education sector and supporting UiTM’s aspirations.

He added that UiTM remains committed to playing a strategic role as a partner in implementing national policies, ensuring that the Higher Education Development Plan 2026–2035 is realised effectively in producing graduates who embody the principles of Karamah Insaniah. - January 22, 2026
