THE poisonous Portuguese man o’ war siphonophore, which is closely related to the jellyfish, has been found along the coastal shores of northern Sarawak fronting the South China Sea.
The Miri Civil Defence Unit has issued an alert to the public to be cautious when walking along the beaches.
The organisms were found on the shores yesterday evening.
"Our teams went to the Miri shores at the Luak Esplanade and made the discoveries after being alerted by beachgoers.
"We have placed warning flags to inform the public of those areas where the Portuguese man o’ war are found.
"The sting can be very painful and poisonous", the Civil Defence said today.
Personnel from the unit have collected the specimens that have been washed ashore for proper disposal.
Sarawak has a coastal shore of at least 1,000 km from the southern tip to the northern region. – The Vibes, April 4, 2024
