THE firearm that caused the death of the Lahad Datu police chief's teenage daughter was locked in a cabinet, Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said.
He said police were working to determine if the shooting was due to negligence.
"The firearm was kept in a locked cabinet in the main bedroom of the residence. The victim, being the youngest child, was familiar with the room, but the specifics of how she accessed the cabinet are still under investigation," he said.
The 14-year-old daughter of the top cop is believed to have accidentally shot herself with a Walther P99 pistol at home in Taman Tabanak.
Her body was discovered by her elder brother, Jauteh said.
At the time of the incident, the victim's father was away in Kinabatangan to prepare for his relocation after he was promoted on April 1.
A post-mortem at Lahad Datu Hospital revealed the cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Authorities have classified the case as a sudden death pending further investigation. – April 18, 2024.
