A FULL investigation has been launched out to establish the cause of the deadly mid-air collision between two military helicopters in Lumut, Perak.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Defence Ministry will work with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) to find the cause of the incident.

Anwar extended his condolences to the families of the 10 victims.

"The tragedy is a loss for the nation and the armed forces. The country joins in sorrow over this heartbreaking tragedy. Condolences to the families of the victims, and may they be granted strength to face this tragedy.

"This tragedy has deeply affected the armed forces family, and is a massive loss for the country. May God bless them and place them among the righteous," he said.

Earlier today, two armed forces helicopters – an Agusta Westland AW139 Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM) and a Eurocopter Fennec – crashed during flypast training for the navy’s 90th anniversary celebrations.

All 10 crew members on board both helicopters died.

Earlier, in a statement, the navy said the 10 were confirmed to have died at the scene.

"The bodies have been sent to the hospital at the TLDM base for identification purposes," it said in a brief statement confirming the 9.32am crash.

“The RMN requests the public not to share videos of the incident to preserve the sensitivities of the families and the investigation process.” – April 23, 2024
