FORMER Penang state executive councillor Datuk Phee Boon Poh remains in the intensive care unit of a private hospital after being admitted for a suspected cardiac arrest on Thursday night.

An official representing his daughter, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, said announced this today.

“(He) is not allowed to receive any visitors for now," the official said.

The 72-year-old Boon Pah, a DAP strongman from Butterworth, served Penang from 2008 until last year when he was told to make way for a younger crop of leaders.

His daughter, Syn Tze, won the Sungai Puyu state seat last year.

A politician who emerged in an era when DAP was weak in Penang, Phee won the Bagan Jermal state seat in 1990 and 2004.

In 2004, he was the sole party backbencher in the 40-seat Penang assembly.

Boon Poh introduced annual state welfare handouts for the disabled, poor, and elderly in 2008. He also initiating a no-plastic-bag day at the supermarkets, a programme that has since been expanded to include many other commercial establishments. – August 3, 2024
