HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reassured the public that national security and public order remain its top priorities, particularly through law enforcement agencies such as the police.
He explained that there is no need for concern over the recent shooting incident at Setia City Mall as the police have shown a strong level of readiness.
“The message from my ministry to the public is clear: we will guarantee your safety. Public order is our utmost priority, and we assure you that the country’s security is under control.
“There is no need for panic over this isolated incident,” he said.
He said that although the suspect has yet to be captured, the police were quick to identify his past criminal record.
On obtaining a firearm licence in Malaysia, he said it is a tedious process that involves stringent vetting and can take years to complete.
"For every 100 appeals of the licence, I would usually only approve a maximum of three.
"One level of screening is conducted by Bukit Aman, and another by the ministry," he said.
Saifuddin also said the Setia Alam shooting showed a need to review the training modules of security guards and auxiliary policemen.
“Currently, security personnel are required to undergo training before they start their duties. However, given the evolving nature of security threats and incidents occurring in public spaces, it is timely to reconsider additional measures.
“I will instruct my officers to discuss possible improvements to induction training, ensuring that the right aspects are prioritised and given due attention,” he added. – February 10, 2025
